Intraocular Lens (IOL)

Updated: Sep 27, 2021

An intraocular lens (or IOL) is a tiny, artificial lens for the eye which is used as a replacement for the eye's natural lens which is removed during cataract surgery.

Similar to prescription eyeglasses and contact lens, IOLs come in different focusing power. To determine the size of your lens, your ophthalmologist will take some measurements of your eye and these measurements are used to set your IOLs focusing power.

What are IOLs made of?

IOLs are made of silicone, acrylic, or other plastic compositions and are coated with a special material to help protect your eyes from the sun's harmful UV rays.
